Gwen Stefani's Makeup Artist Defends Her Billboard Music Awards Look
Gwen Stefani's Makeup Artist Defends Her Surprising Look at the BBMAs
When Gwen Stefani stepped on stage at the Billboard Music Awards to perform "Go Ahead and Break My Heart" with her BF Blake Shelton, the audience seemed to be more focused on the singer's makeup than they were on the music. Over recent years, Gwen has become synonymous with a certain look — usually featuring winged eyeliner and a bright red lip — and at the BBMAs, she decided to go with something a little more subdued.
Fans were not pleased — and many expressed that they thought Gwen was nearly unrecognizable. The look was so controversial, in fact, that Gwen's long-time makeup artist Gregory Arlt has officially taken to Facebook to defend it.
"Well, the armchair warriors out there in social media land had some very strong opinions about this makeup look I did on Gwen for the Billboard Awards," he wrote. "It's basically what we've always been doing, just no upper liner or false lashes (and yes, a pale lip as opposed to a color). You'd think I sent her out with tinted moisturizer and Chapstick from what people were saying!"
Gregory went on to say that he and Gwen have been working together for many years, and that she's always been super open to experimentation when it comes to makeup. In an interview with Racked, he also further explained that the look was a collaborative effort — and that Gwen absolutely loved it.
"For this look we wanted to go with a very pared down, 'hyper natural,' earthy look," Gregory told Racked. "We've been playing around with this look for shoots and videos recently and felt it would be the perfect complement to the elaborate gown and sexy hair that was done for the show. It was all about skin and highlights."
Regardless of how fans felt about the look, he insists that getting ready for this year's BBMAs was actually one of the best times they've ever had together.
