1. "I looked up at the third-story window and saw a little girl’s face peering down out the corner of one of the windows."
"Once I was antiques shopping with a friend in a town that was established in the late 1700s. We entered a very old three-story shop and immediately got a creepy feeling. We decided to go upstairs and look at some of the old books. Aside from the sales lady downstairs, we were the only ones in the shop. It was very quiet while we were browsing when all of a sudden, we heard the sound of running on the floor above us. We looked at each other and then climbed the very narrow staircase to the top floor. It was very crammed with antiques — there was no way someone could have full-on ran in that space. There was no one up there. Creeped out though we were, we continued to look at the artifacts when I picked up a teacup and told my friend it would be a good gift for my grandmother. As she came over, clear as day, we heard a little girl giggle right next to us. I threw the teacup down and we flew down the stairs. We asked the lady of the shop about the history of the building and she told us that it used to be an apartment. The third floor had a fire in the mid 1800s and the family living there was able to escape — all except for the 5-year-old daughter who died. My friend and I looked at each other and left. A few weeks later, I was driving through the town late at night when I was stopped at the stoplight outside of the same antique shop. I looked up at the third-story window and saw a little girl’s face peering down out the corner of one of the windows. I never wanted a red light to change so badly in my life." —Allie, 19
2. "She was all gray, including her stringy gray hair covering most of her face."
"So I was doing a high school musical in the summer when I was in middle school, and a few of my friends and I decided to explore the neighboring high school we had rehearsals in when we had a break. There was no one in the gym, so we thought it’d be fun to sneak in and hang out in there when we had free time. When we walked in the door, the lights were off, so there was only a little bit of sunlight coming through the windows on the one high wall. Right in the middle of the basketball court, where the circle with the school emblem was, stood a woman who had a janitor’s mop in hand, with the bucket beside her. She was all gray, including her stringy gray hair covering most of her face. All four of us immediately screamed and ran out of there. We all confirmed what we saw, feeling crazy. On our way back to the rehearsal space, we saw a real janitor, and asked her if there were any other janitors working. She told us she was the only person working the entire summer. I saw one of the girls who was with me when it happened a few years ago, and I brought up the incident to her. She told me she’d still occasionally gotten nightmares, and she has and always will believe that we saw a ghost that day." —Sarah, 20
3. "Two men had drowned in the very lake we were at earlier on in the year."
"During the summer, five friends and I went to a cottage for a birthday, and we had found the cottage last-minute and for quite cheap as well, so we were happy. It was small, but cozy and right beside a lake. But by the second day we were there, things began to get weird — we heard footsteps throughout the cottage, the broom disappeared from the kitchen to end up in a remote area of the basement, and we all had the eeriest feeling of a male presence. One of us ended up looking up the location to find out two men had drowned in the very lake we were at earlier on in the year. Unfazed, that night, all six of us went outside to light a fire and roast marshmallows. When we went back in, there were six water bottles in a line beside the sink —upside down. We started freaking out, because there were six of us, six water bottles, and we had left the kitchen clean when we had left to build the fire. We all slept together in the living room that night and left the very next day. After that, we found out that the men had died because their canoe had flipped upside down and they had drowned. To this day, I can’t explain how those water bottles ended up that way." —Stephanie, 24
4. "I was driving home and every person I would see had my cousin’s face."
"I lived with my uncle and cousins. My relationship with my cousin was very distant even though we lived together. Sometimes, I would feel like she would walk by behind me when I was in the kitchen or hall of the house, and see ’her’ shadow in the corner of my eye. But when I would look, there was no one, and no one else would be home. This happened a good five times, and she would never say anything, just go by quickly. It was scary, especially because one time I was driving home and every person I would see had my cousin’s face. However, when I got home, she was sleeping in her bed. I got scared and instantly started praying for whatever it was to go away." —Rose, 18
5. "I turned around and saw a ghost-white toddler in nothing but a saggy diaper coming toward me."
"I was on a trip with my boyfriend and his mom when we stopped at a hotel in Oklahoma for the night. We decided to stop at a cheap hotel to save money. The room had a kitchenette in it, and the freezer was full of beer, and the beds had trash under them, so it already left a bad taste in my mouth. We went to bed and around midnight; the light in the bathroom started flickering on and off. I woke my boyfriend up to go investigate and he said the switch was just stuck in the middle of on and off. Ok, but why would it just now start flickering?! I was stressed out and went outside, and immediately after sitting down on the sidewalk, a swarm of bats flew out from the tree next to me. I was super on edge at this point. I turned around and saw a ghost-white toddler in nothing but a saggy diaper coming toward me with no one else around. It was almost 1 a.m. and I was really confused. He had almost reached me when a woman came around the corner to collect him. She silently grabbed his hand and led him back to wherever he came from, and I ran back to the room and hid under the covers the rest of the night." —Christyna, 25
6. "I came into the dark kitchen and saw who I thought was my uncle peeking out of the darkened bathroom. He was smiling and almost laughing."
"We always thought my grandmother’s house was haunted. One day, when I was 11, I was sleeping over. I decided to sleep on the second floor of the house with my aunt and uncle. It was the winter and cold up there, so my uncle sent me downstairs for extra blankets. In my grandma’s house, you came down the back stairs through the kitchen where the bathroom was and into the living room where my grandma’s room was. I came into the dark kitchen and saw who I thought was my uncle peeking out of the darkened bathroom. He was smiling and almost laughing. I said, ’Very funny, Uncle Al, but you’re not gonna scare me,’ and the door seem to slam on its own. So I walked into my grandmother’s room for the blankets and saw my uncle in the front hall talking on the phone — the same uncle I had just seen looking at me in the bathroom. I was so freaked out I refused to go back through the house by myself. I told my uncle and my grandmother right after it happened because I was so freaked out. How could he be on the phone if he was just in the bathroom? They believed me and I think they were a little scared too. It was a long time before I went anywhere in the house by myself." —Melissa, 35
7. "I felt two hands behind me that pushed me out of this window."
"Where I live, we have a few known very haunted areas. Two of them are abandoned hospitals, and they’re very easy to gain access to. I was wandering around at an abandoned psychiatric center by myself, taking photos. It was December, and we had a lot of snow at the time. I stopped to sit and take a few pictures through the semi-circle window that was flush with the floor and about 3 feet high at its peak. I was sitting with my back against the wall and I put my camera away to eat a snack. I felt two hands behind me that pushed me out of this window. It wasn’t a far fall and I landed in a 6-foot snow bank. I landed on my back and it knocked the wind out of me, but I got up and left immediately and have not returned since. A few other times I was there, ladders would suddenly break loose, ones I had just checked the tightness of. There was always strange movements and noises. I was there with a few people and we all heard a bloodcurdling scream coming from below us. I’m careful about who I tell this story to because not everyone believes in the paranormal. —Sydney, 21
8. "I could hear my name being called but when I turned around, no one was there."
"In the middle of the night at home, I was listening to music. This is usually the time I’m alone while everyone is asleep. As I listened to this song, I could hear my name being called but when I turned around, no one was there. I knew everyone was in bed, but sometimes someone comes out to use the bathroom — not this time. Every time I played the song, I would hear my name being called at the same part. Because I had a weird feeling, I stopped listening to this particular song. I sat down and that’s when I almost cringed. I felt cold air behind me, but it was hot that night. It felt as if something was breathing on my neck and touching my hair. I almost peed on myself. I was scared to go to bed, but even more scared of staying up." —Ashley, 24
9. "I went to look at the photo to see if it was post-worthy and then there it was — a ghostly face."
"My grandparents’ house was once the community church before it became a house. I have always had a fear of the house. I cannot stay the night without a TV on all night for background sound. We have had multiple experiences in the house, from voices, footsteps, and things being moved. My experience that topped it all occurred two years ago. I was staying with my grandparents at the time and I was in my room. I decided I wanted to take selfies because I was bored (I mean what else would you do when you’re bored?) I decided I needed better lighting, so I sat in front of my lamp and snapped a picture. I went to look at the photo to see if it was post-worthy and then there it was — a ghostly face. You couldn’t miss it. I didn’t miss it. It terrified me. I ran to show my grandmother and she cried and held me. I still have the photo and it still scares me to look at it." —Amellyia, 25
10. "We were sitting in the living room, watching TV, when we heard a loud thumping noise."
"In our old house, I lived with my mom, brother, my mom’s boyfriend, his son, and our very large English Mastiff dog. One day, my almost-stepbrother and I were home alone. We were sitting in the living room watching TV when we heard a loud thumping noise coming from what we thought was downstairs around the corner. I initially thought it was our dog as she was over 100 pounds, but sure enough, I look to my left and she’s sound asleep on the floor. My stepbrother looked at me and even though we knew his dad wasn’t home, we called for him anyway hoping it was him that was coming down the stairs. Nope. Nothing. No answer. No one was there. Moving faster than we ever have before, I got the dog, and he grabbed a machete from his room, and we ran outside to the driveway where I called my mom to pick the three of us up. Still to this day, we have no idea who or what it was, but I still get the chills thinking about it." —Brittany, 24
